Socioeconomic status should be seen alongside smoking as mortality risk, say experts
This BMJ article reports that evidence from The Lifepath project, funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 collaborative, indicates that socioeconomic position is an “independent risk factor” for premature death and physical functioning, while a low socioeconomic position encourages the uptake of well recognised risk behaviours such as smoking, high alcohol consumption, or a diet low in fruit and vegetables.
