Preventing and treating ill health

Many of the most important health behaviours significant to the development of chronic diseases follow the social gradient: smoking, obesity, lack of physical activity, poor nutrition. Action in these areas requires evidence-based programmes that focus public health interventions on reducing the social gradient, and programmes that address social and economic factors which are the causes of the causes of ill health.

Governments should prioritise tackling the social determinants of poor health behaviours and build policies which enable people to take control of their own life, including their own health.

The reports and case studies below focus on priority public health conditions such as smoking, obesity and drinking, and advocate prevention and early detection.
